Kildare's defence of the O'Byrne Cup began with a comfortable defeat of Louth in Newbridge.

Leitrim began their defence of the Connacht League with a 3-17 to 1-7 defeat of GMIT.

While Mayo, Roscommon and Galway all began the year in winning fashion.

Meanwhile, in hurling, the Munster Junior Inter-Firm Final between Zimmer and EI Electronics takes place at the UL Astro GAA pitch at 7 o'clock tonight (Monday January 5th).
