New format announced for Munster GAA pre season competitions

The Munster Council have unveiled a revamped format for its pre season competitions.

Clare will compete in a revamped McGrath Cup for the first time in two years, while the hurlers are in the new Munster Hurling League.

The major change for 2016 is that no 3rd level sides are involved in either competition.

Both have been changed to a group format, rather than the old knockout structure.

In football's McGrath Cup, Clare make their return for the first time in two seasons, and open 2016 with a home tie against Tipp on January 3rd before a trip to Kerry a week later.

The winners of the two groups then meet in the final.

The Waterford Crystal Cup is no more, and is replaced by the Munster Senior Hurling League.

Clare get underway also on January 3rd with a home tie against Cork, with Kerry coming to the Banner 10 days later for a midweek encounter.

Davy Fitz's side then travel to Waterford and Limerick on consecutive weekends.

The top two in the league standings will then contest the final.
