A paediatrician has been found guilty of poor professional performance over his treatment of a baby boy at South Tipperary General Hospital in 2012.
The Medical Council found Muhammad Ilyas Khan guilty of six out of seven counts – including that he failed to treat the newborn for a lack of oxygen to the brain, that he failed to arrange for his transfer to a neo-natal intensive care unit and that he told his parents that the baby was ‘fine’ where he knew, or ought to have known that was not the case.
The child, who was not sent for head cooling treatment after his birth, suffers from cerebral palsy.
In a statement, his parents said they were pleased with the outcome of the inquiry, but added that it would not change their lives.
The Fitness to Practice Committee will be making a recommendation on possible sanctions for Dr Khan in due course.
