PRO of Clare Fine Gael have Dismissed Speculation Of Withdrawal Of Bids For Election

The PRO of Clare Fine Gael has dismissed speculation that four of the party's candidates will have to withdraw their bids to run for the party in the general election.

Reports suggested that only two candidates will be selected by party members at Friday's convention, but local organisers say there's no directive as of yet.

Speculation suggests that two Fine Gael candidates will be selected to represent the party in Clare in Friday's General Election.

If a directive along these lines was to be issued by party HQ, then it's anticipated that Deputies Joe Carey and Pat Breen would be added to the ticket without a vote.

In that case, Senators Martin Conway and Tony Mulcahy as well as Ennis Councillor Mary Howard and Ger O'Halloran would then withdraw.

However speaking today, Senator Conway said he hopes grass root members will be given the opportunity to have their say.

He thinks Fine Gael would be best served by running three candidates.

The PRO of Clare Fine Gael has dismissed today's report, saying that no directive has been issued at this stage.

Cillian Griffey says there's no way of knowing at this stage what will happen on the night, but has told Fine Gael members to expect a vote.
