Calls For Government To Support Childcare Costs

Calls are being made for increased Government supports for childcare as Clare parents face the burden of chosing between working or claiming unemployment benefit.

The Manager of the Clare Family Resource centre made her comments in light of a new report which found that parents are paying up to 25,000 euro a year for care for their young children.

A survey of more than 150 creches across the country has found that some Clare parents are having to pay up to 17,000 euro a year on care for their children, with half of those at work earning less than 28,000 euro a year.

The Clare Family Resource Centre, as a community creche, takes part in a number of schemes including the Government subvention scheme, which eases the cost burden on parents.

But regardless of that, Manager Maureen Keane says parents are still struggling to cover costs

The Government is now being called on to look at childcare models in other countries, where a percentage of people's wages goes towards the care of children.

Spokesperson for Mummypages.ie Lucinda O'Sullivan says the situation has now reached crisis levels and parents are tired of broken promises from Government.

She believes its time for public representatives to take action
