Calls For Increased Investment In Health Service To Tackle Overcrowding In Region

A Scarriff-based doctor believes the overcrowding crisis at the region's main hospital is comparable to Einstein's definition of insanity.

It follows the release of figures by the INMO which showed that 48 people were waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick yesterday.

High volumes of patients presenting at the emergency department as well as the closure of an in-patient ward is behind the unusually high numbers, which peaked yesterday at 48.

UL Hospitals Group says the number of very sick patients presenting to the emergency department has increased over the past number of days and the temporary closure of an inpatient ward for refurbishment has worsened the problem.

Patients are being reminded to visit their GP or out of hours service in the first instance or to attend their Local Injuries Unit for minor injuries.

The President of the NAGP, Scarriff-based Dr Conor Mc Gee says current measures being taken to alleviate pressure clearly aren't working and now is the time to try a different approach.

Clare's Labour TD Michael Mc Namara says increased spending in the health service must now be a priority in the upcoming budget to tackle the ongoing issue of overcrowding.

Deputy McNamara says a number of factors have led to the current crisis.
