Loophole In drink Driving Laws Closed

Emergency laws have been signed to close a loophole in the country's drink driving laws.

The new measure means drink-driving tickets can now be issued in either Irish or English.

The High Court yesterday ruled the result of breathalyser tests must be issued in both Irish AND English meaning thousands of previous prosecutions could be called into question.

Minister Pascal Donoghue has now signed emergency laws to close the loophole but it can't be applied retrospectively so the status of the previous tickets is unclear.
