A group of kayakers had just set out from a nearby slipway when they found the man. They pulled the casualty from the water and raised the alarm.

Ambulances from Ennistymon and Ennis responded to the incident along with gardaí and the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard.

The kayakers recovered the man to the slipway where he was taken into care by paramedics.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter had been training in the Loop Head area at the time and reached the scene within minutes.

The man, believed to be in his 40’s, has been airlifted to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
