The Dublin Fire Brigade alone says it attended 193 bonfires – answering one 999 call every 40 seconds.

They live-tweeted their work yesterday to show the stresses firefighters are put under at this time of year.

One of their ambulances was hit with a bottle on a call-out in Balbriggan – luckily none of the crew were hurt.

An attack at the city centre at Oliver Bond flat complex had a more tragic outcome however.

A 21-year-old man was seriously wounded there just before 3am and died from his injuries in hospital a short time later.

Gardaí from Kevin Street are investigating and say a post-mortem will be carried out later today.

It was the second stabbing in the city on Halloween night.

An attack at a bonfire in Drumheath in Blanchardstown has left another man in a critical condition.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to both incidents.
