This plan being launched by the Justice Minister and the Garda Commissioner aims to tackle high-volume crime, in particular burglaries.

The Irish Independent reports that substantial additional resources will be deployed and garda units responsible for tracking down criminals will be beefed up.

Among those identified by Gardai are six mobile gangs –  based mainly in Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Sligo – who are suspected of carrying out nightly robberies using high-powered cars on the motorway network.

Garda deployment will include regional support units and traffic corps, backed up by local personnel.

The full details of the operation will be announced by the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan later.
