ESB Won’t Increase Water Flow From Parteen Weir Today

The ESB says it won't increase the amount of water flowing through the Parteen Weir on the River Shannon today.

It comes as the army has been deployed to Clonlara after rising water levels in the Lower River Shannon resulted in the encroachment of floodwaters on a small number of properties in Springfield.

Springfield in Clonlara is among the worse affected areas on South East Clare with water levels continuing to rise as further heavy rain is forecast today.

Fears have been expressed that a further increase of water from Parteen Weir would result in a number of homes becoming flooded but the ESB now says it won't increase the release of water from 375 cubic metres per second today.

Engineering Manager Tom Browne says they will continue to monitor the levels in Lough Derg but with more bad weather on the way, the level of water flowing down the river may increase in the coming days.

Affected homeowners are being assisted with access to and from their properties by Clare Fire and Rescue Service and Clare Civil Defence and Clare County Council are continuing to carry out a sandbagging operation.

Crews have been working tirelessly to pump water away from homes, thankfully none of which have yet become flooded.

Springfield resident Geraldine Quinlan is thanking everyone involved in the flood defence operation for their efforts.

The army has been called in to assist in the flood defence process which will continue throughout the week and into the weekend.

Commandant Pat Murnane is in Springfield and he says every effort is being made to protect homes in the area.
