ESB Warns Flow Of Water From Parteen Weir Likely To Increase

The ESB is warning that the flow of water through Parteen Weir is likely to increase over the coming days with heavy rainfall forecast for Clare.

It comes as a severe flood warning has been issued for the entire county with up to 50 millimetres of rain expected this weekend.

ESB says the release of water from Parteen Weir will remain at 375 cubic metres per second again today but with water levels ecpected to rise in Lough Derg over the coming days, that flow is likely to increase.

Met Éireann has upgraded its weather alert for Clare to orange, with up to 50 millimetres of rainfall expected overnight tonight and throughout tomorrow.

Clare County Council hass issued a severe flood alert for the entire county saying that roads, land and property in flood prone areas are likely to experience flooding. 

Senior Engineer Tom Tiernan has issued a stark warning for people in all areas of Clare, that water levels may mirror those seen in 2009.

No houses have yet been flooded in Clonlara but residents in Springfield are on hight alert, with many families having evacuated over the past number of days as flood water continue to rise.

Pat Mason says that regardless of what happens this weekend, there will be serious reprocussions for the entire community once flood waters recede. 

Meanwhile, up to 5 thousand euro in flood relief funding will be administered to small businesses over the next ten days, while further funding will be made available after Christmas.

The Minister for Agriculture and Defence says the applications, which can be downloaded from the Irish Red Cross's website will be based on trust and self-declaration.

Minister Simon Coveney says the aim is to help affected businesses as quickly as possible.
