Nurses To Be Balloted On New Proposals Agreed At WRC

Nurses will be balloted in the coming weeks on proposals agreed at the Workplace Relations Commission last night to avert strike action today.

The HSE and Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation agreed to a raft of measures including 2 extra days leave for existing nurses next year and in 2017 to compensate for breaks lost.

The union says strike has been deferred pending the outcome of a ballot of nurses.

General Secretary of the INMO Liam Doran has acknowledged that changes to the escalation policy in EDs will impact on waiting times for elective surgeries.

But Stephen McMahon, CEO of the Irish Patients Association, says cancelling those surgeries as a way of easing overcrowding in hospitals is a short term solution.
