€8,000 Fund For Burial Ground Development In Clare Described As “Paltry”

Funding set aside to assist community groups in the provision of new burial grounds or extensions to existing graveyards has been described as "paltry".

The eight thousand euro fund, which is provided by Clare County Council is paid to groups who have completed a large part of the planning process, including the purchase of the site in question and full planning approval.

Kilrush councillor Gabriel Keating is calling on the Government to step forward to deal with the impending shortage of graves in the county, saying Clare can't afford the cost of developing burial grounds.

The Chairman of the Kilrush Parish Graveyards Maintanance Group doesn't believe this proposal would work however.

Tom Prendiville beleives the onus is on the council itself to come up with a solution to the problem and says eight thousand euro is paltry compared to the overall cost.
