Increase in transatlantic passengers through Shannon Airport

Over 312,000 people have flown to and from Shannon Airport on transatlantic flights in the first nine months of the year.

New CSO figures show an increase in the number of passengers travelling to Boston, New York's JFK Airport and to Philadelphia.

However, the number of passengers to Newark and to Chicago have dropped.

Despite this, the total number of passengers on flights to North America is up by 2.5%.

The transatlantic markets are seen as key by local tourism providers, with US visitors typically spending longer in Ireland than their European counterparts.
