Around five thousand homes across the country are without power this morning, the majority of those in Cork, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal.

An orange weather alert remains in place for Clare until 9 o'clock this morning and road users are being advised to take extreme care, with special warnings for drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists.

Met Éireann forecaster David Rogers says things should start to improve later today.
