Continued Scepticism Over Future Of Moneypoint Despite Reassurances From Energy Minister

There's continued scepticism about the future of Moneypoint despite reassurances from the Energy Minister that it's here to stay.

Alex White insists that the West Clare power station will play in key role in the provision of electricity for decades to come, but that decisions need to be made on its transition to renewable energy.

The Energy Minister is confident that Moneypoint will feature in the provision of electricity here for decades to come but he insists that decisions on its conversion to renewable energy willl have to be made within the life of the next Government.

Alex White believes that as a stand alone company, the decision on how to fuel the power station will ultimately be down to the ESB.

This week has seen fresh calls for Moneypoint to be converted to burn biomass but today Minster White told Clare Fm's Morning Focus that he's not convinced that this is the right way to go.

The Green Party says biomass would neither be "economically viable or environmentally sustainable".

The party's election candidate in Clare, Fergal Smith says the immediate focus should be on utilising Moneypoint's infrastructure by developing a research facility there which would explore ways of fueling the facility.

Kilrush Independate Councillor Ian Lynch is sceptical about the timing of the Energy Minister's comments, with only weeks to go to the general election.

The Clare Election candidate says several Governments have failed to make a decision on Moneypoint's future.
