Clare TD Predicts New Government Won’t Last Half Its Term

A Clare TD has predicted that the next Government won't even last half of its term.

Fine Gael's Pat Breen's comments come as attention now turns to the formation of a government and the strategy of the two largest parties in those negotiations

Speaking following their election to the 32nd Dáil over the weekend, Deputies Timmy Dooley, Dr Michael Harty, Pat Breen and Joe Carey have today said there's an obligation on all four to work together to ensure political stability.

With recounts underway in a number of constituencies, attention is now turning to the formation of a new Government.

Many within Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have spoken against a partnership between the two civil war parties, but Fine Gael's Joe Carey believes his party will have to examine the possibility of the so-called grand coalition.

Fianna Fáil's Mícheál Martin will be put forward as Taoiseach when the Dáil meets next week, and today the party's Clare TD says they have a responsibility to the people to give affect to their mandate.

Timmy Dooley also believes that independents may have a critical role to play in the new Government:

Independent Deputy Michael Harty says the number of non-party TDs in the 32nd Dáil has sent a clear message that the party system has become detached from electorate.

He's now open to negotiations with any party.

But as speculation mounts as to who will form the new Government, Fine Gael TD Pat Breen believes it won't even last half of its term.
