32nd Dáil Meets This Morning As New Govt Urged To Make Housing A Priority

The 32nd Dáil meets for the first time this morning with no prospect of a government being formed.

The first item on the agenda will be to elect a Ceann Comhairle – this vote will take place by secret ballot for the first time in history .

Once that's done the nominations for Taoiseach will be voted on, however as yet there is no sign of a viable coalition partnership being formed.

Re-elected Fianna Fáil TD for Clare, Timmy Dooley, says his party could work well in a minority led Government.

Meanwhile, the new government is being urged to make housing its main priority.

Housing charity Respond! says a large-scale programme of social housing construction is the best way to tackle waiting lists in Co. Clare.

It's outlining range of proposals to tackle the problem, including a national register of all land assests the country, a dedicated Minister for Housing and Planning and provisions for public acquisition of private lands, by compulsory purchase if necessary.

There are currently some 4000 families on the housing list in Clare but Respond!'s Western Regional Manager Paul Hargaden says there is still a large amount of property lying vacant.
