Renewed Calls For Shannon Waste Water Strategy

There are renewed calls for a long term strategy to address problems with the waste water system in Shannon.

It comes as Irish Water begins work on a 3million euro project of improvement works in the town.

A full inspection of the water network in Shannon will be carried out  with equipment which has fallen into disrepair being fixed or upgraded, while a survey team will also clear sewers where necessary to remove blockages.

Work on the project to improve the operation of the local wastewater treatment plant has already begun and it's anticipated this will be completed by the middle of this year.

It's also hoped this will help address a persistant foul odour that has been affecting the area.

Shannon Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy is welcoming the commencement of the project and hopes further investment will be made.

However, a local Independent Councillor is sounding a note of caution.

Gerry Flynn says while any improvement work is to be welcomed, it's not near enough to solve the sewage problems facing Shannon.

Meanwhile, Irish Water say they are aware similar issues facing other areas of the county.

Regional Information Officer, Aisling Buckley, claims there are more projects in the pipeline for Co. Clare
