Reports Confirming Arrest Of Brussels Terror Attack Suspect Now Claimed To Be Untrue

Reports confirming the arrest of Najim Laachraoui – one of the suspects in yesterday's terror attack are now said to be untrue.

Belgian media were previously claiming a key suspect in yesterday's Brussels airport bombing had been arrested.

It comes as hundreds of people have marked a minute's silence in memory of the 34 killed in yesterday's terror attacks in Brussels.

The arrest of Najim Laachraoui – one of the senior operatives in yesterday's attacks; known also for his links with Isis in Syria is now said to have been a case of mistaken identity.

Police sources had confirmed that they had arrested Laachraoui, however subsequent reports say the man they arrested was wrongly identified as the 24 year Belgian and Europe's most wanted man.

Najim Laachraoui was seen in CCTV footage before yesterday's attack in Zaventem airport and now remains at large.

Terror Expert Serge Stroobants says the arrest of Salah Abdeslam last Friday could have brought yesterday's attacks forward.

Hundreds of people have marked a minute's silence in memory of the 34 killed in yesterday's terror attacks in Brussels.

At the end of the vigil, in the Place de la Bourse, crowds erupted in applause.

Belgium's observing three days of national mourning following the bomb blasts at Brussels airport and on a metro train. 

Patricia Coppens, who travelled into the city this morning, says the terrorists must not be allowed to win.

Meanwhile, a North Clare mother has expressed her relief that her son escaped injury in yesterday's terror attacks.

Doolin native David Garrihy, who has been working in Brussels for eight years, was in Zavantem Airport as two explosions ripped through the facility.

His mother Caitríona says that despite having a difficult time since yesterday's attacks, he will continue to stay on in the country.
