Tourism numbers fall at Clare’s two OPW sites

Figures from the Office of Public Works show more than 4.9 million people visited 72 sites across the country last year, an annual increase of 11 %.

But for Clare's heritage sites, the picture wasn't as bright with both experiencing a decline in tourist numbers.

The 6th centuary monastic settlement of Scattery Island near Kilrush recorded only 1,750 visitors last year, an annual drop of 30%.  This was also the lowest number of visitors to any OPW-run site in the country.

While, Ennis Friary, had 11,377 visitors in 2015, a 40% drop on the previous year.

Nationally, income from entrance fees, publications and heritage card sales were also up to more than 9.4 million euro while the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin remains the OPW's most popular site in the country.
