BA flight diverts to Shannon due to stormy UK weather conditions

A British Airways Superjumbo diverted to Shannon Airport this morning because of weather issues in southern England.

BA flight 56 from Johannesburg to London Heathrow was one of dozens of services affected by Storm Katie which has been battering the UK.

The Airbus A380-800, the largest passenger jet in the world, was placed in a holding pattern for a time south of London before the crew opted to divert to Shannon.

The flight touched down at 7.30am and continued it’s journey at 9.20am after being refuelled and cleared to return to London.

It’s the second time this month that a British Airways A380 diverted to the mid west airport because of weather issues in the UK.

Shannon saw a three-fold rise in unscheduled landings 2015 because of weather, airport closures or flight crews being “out of hours.”

There were 270 such incidents last year compared to just 92 in 2014.
