The Shannon-based Irish coast Guard helicopter was on it's way to a training exercise around 5 o'clock yesterday evening, when crew members spotted a body on the shoreline near Colmanstown Castle and raised the alarm.

The Kilrush RNLI lifeboat was dispatched, while members of the Kilkee unit of the Coast Guard were also mobilised to assist.

Members of the Divisional Crime Scene Investigation unit carried out a preliminary examination before the body was transferred to a local farmyard by Coast Guard volunteers, where the victim was formally pronounced dead by a doctor.

The body, thought to be that of a man, has since been transferred to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem examination.

No formal identification has yet been made but Gardaí are checking their missing persons database in an effort to identify the person.
