Two Main Parties Close In On Irish Water Deal

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are holding meetings of their TDs to discuss a potential deal on Irish Water.

The reported deal would see the utility made a state body with charges suspended for a number of years.

The compromise deal on Irish Water is being put to the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parliamentary parties this afternoon.

The deal could see the utility kept but made public with generous allowances put in place.

But not all within the parties seem completely on board with it.

Fianna Fáil's John McGuiness saying they should stick to their commitments.

We don't know yet what would happen to those who have already paid their water bills.

Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty hit out at the proposed deal saying 99 TDs were elected on a platform of scrapping charges.

It would mean for Fine Gael that the utility is retained, but is stuck on the state's balance sheet.

Michael Ring said he wants to hear the full details before making up his mind.

Both parliamentary parties are meeting separately with more negotiations expected later.

Meanwhile, as a deal is reportedly close to being struck on Irish Water, a Clare Fine Gael Seanad candidate insists the controversial body remains the best option for tackling problems with water infrastructure here.

It's after a new EPA report which outlines how public water schemes supplying over 11,000 people in the Ennistymon, Mountshannon, Feakle, Carron and Corofin areas all need remediation works.

Ennistymon's Martin Conway has been telling me he's confident that an agreement can be reached which will ultimately benefit the public
