The High Court yesterday dismissed a challenge to the project, but further opposition is expected in the coming weeks.

It's over three years since An Bord Pleanala gave the go-ahead for the bridge crossing at Killaloe/Ballina, but it has since been before the courts following a legal challenge.

That challenge was dismissed by the High Court yesterday but further opposition is expected.

One of the objectors, environmentalist Peter Sweetman, has vowed to continue his efforts to halt the project – he's told Clare FM, that he will return to the High Court on May 25th to obtain a certificate to appeal.

Kilalloe Councillor Tony O'Brien has described the continued opposition as disappointing.

The Shannon River Crossing Project, which also includes a new bypass and other roadworks, was granted over 40 million euro in the Government's Capital Investment Plan last September.

Acting Environment Minister Alan Kelly is adament that despite the dealy in forming a Government, the funding will still be made available.
