Dail Meeting As Government Deal Hangs In The Balance

The Dáil is meeting but has yet to call a vote for a Taoiseach.

It's unclear if enough Independents are willing to vote for Enda Kenny as Clare FM's Fiona McGarry reports:

There was laughter inside the Dáil this afternoon as Noel Rock stood up to nominate Enda Kenny for Taoiseach for the 4th time.

However, elsewhere in Leinster Hose, there has been drama in the past hour as last minute talks continue, in an effort by Fine Gael to secure the support of enough Independents.

Some are out already – Mattie McGrath and Michael Collins say they'll vote against Enda Kenny, while Michael Healy Rae will abstain.

The real attention, however, is focussed on the Independent Alilance.

Reports say they've been unable to reach an agreement on turf cutting.

Under new EU environment laws, the cutting of turf has been banned in a number of bogs around the country, but some Independent TDs want to see the rules relaxed to allow people access turf on their own lands.

Up until a short time ago, speeches were continuing in the Dáil, with no vote held for Taoiseach.

When that goes ahead, it remains to be seen how many TDs will back Enda Kenny.

Earlier, Clare's former Labour TD Michael McNamara told Clare FM tha the feels the number of votes Enda Kenny receives today will play a huge part in whether the new Government will last.
