JPC Meeting Hears OF Fall In Crime Levels In Clare But A Rise In Drink Driving

There's been a 36% drop in burglaries in Clare so far in 2016, compared to the same period last year.

A meeting of the Joint Policing Committee this afternoon heard that crime across a number of categories has decreased, however concern has been expressed over a jump in drink driving offences.

Today's JPC meeting has heard that, in general, crime continues to drop in Co. Clare.

Chief Superintendent John Kerin told the meeting there have been a total of 90 burglaries this year, compared to 140 in the first for four months of 2015.

Property crime is down 14%, while Sexual Offences, Fraud and Weapons and Explosives offences have also all fallen.

However, Chief Superintendent Kerin says these numbers come with a health warning, as crime levels here start at a low base and a spate of a particular type of offence can easily skew percentage figures.

There has been a rise in the number of assaults in the county so far in 2016, up 18 to 113 by the end of April.

And while no fatal accidents have occurred on Clare's roads so far this year, there's been a jump in the number of people arrest for drink driving – a total of 61 which is a rise of 11 compared to 2015.

Chief Superintendent Kerin is particularly concerned over an increase in the number of people in their 20s being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a trend which he says he's not seen for many years.

He also insists, while resourcing still remains an issue for the force in Clare, they are determined to maintain a heavy presence on the county's roads, to ensure the number of serious accidents here remains relatively low.
