Fears That Re-Opening Of Garda Stations Won’t Apply To Clare

A Clare Fianna Fáil General Election candidate says he fears the re-opening of some Garda stations won't benefit Clare.

Six stations, which shut in 2013, will be re-opened as part of a national review, with a decision to be made on specific areas in two months.

One of the more significant changes announced in the Programme for Government is a pledge to examine the re-opening of Garda Stations.

Eight stations were closed here in 2013 in Quin, Inagh, Broadford, Mountshannon, Doonbeg, Kilmihil, Lahinch and Leabasheeda, while the Carrigaholt station was closed before that.

Retired Garda Detective Michael 'Malty' McDonagh, who ran for Fianna Fáil in the general election, fears rural parts of the country will lose out.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited programme for Government promises a number of measures aimed at relieving pressure on our health system.

It contains plans to introduce free GP care for everyone under the age of 18, while it also aims to improve primary care services, and contains a commitment to guarantee the future of GP services in rural areas.

Vice-President of the NAGP and Shannon Doctor Yvonne Williams is optimistic that the changes will make a difference.
