Cautious Welcome In Clare For New Rural Incentives

A cautious welcome has been given locally to new incentives aimed at encouraging first time buyers to live in the centre of rural towns.

The new Rural Affairs Minister, Heather Humpreys says the initiative aims to get young couples to live "on the main street" rather than on the outskirts of provincial towns.

The plans include grants and the re-allocating of vacant commercial properties as residential zones.

Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch has described the measure as a first step towards tackling issues in struggling rural towns and villages but he insists more work needs to be done.
