Claims That Clare County Council Is A Leader In Provision Of Traveller Accomodation

It's claimed that Clare County Council is one of the front-runners in the country in providing traveller accomodation.

It follows a new report from the European Committee of Social rights, which found that a number of sites around the country are in poor condition and are badly located.

The new report from the European Committee of Social Rights has found that a number of sites around the country are in poor condition and are badly located.

The committee also found that Ireland was in breach of an EU treaty, after Travellers were threatened with evictions, without the necessary safeguards.

At the end of last year 534 families were living in unauthorised halting sites in Ireland and over 5 and a half thousand travellers were sharing accommodation in overcrowded conditions with limited access to bathroom facilities.

The Irish Human Rights Comission says the problem is directly linked to the provision of accomodation by local authorities.

Dermot Hayes, who sits on Clare County Council's Housing Committee believes that more needs to be done by the county's local representatives to improve conditions for travellers.

Chair of the committee, Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn also served on the Local Travellers Accommodation Consultative Committee.

He believes Clare has been a leader in the provision of accomodation but admits there have been difficulties.
