Divisions In Labour Party Of Leadership Election

A former Clare Labour TD insists the party needs to move on from the controversy over the party's leadership contest and concentrate on issues affecting the lives of ordinary people.

The comments from Michael McNamara come as Alan Kelly has spoken publicly for the first time since his failed bid to secure the position.

Last night, the Clare Labour party's AGM heard calls for a review of how the leader is selected, to allow ordinary members a greater say.

Currently, only members of the parliamentary party take part in the election process.

The party's Chairman in Clare Dermot Hayes wants that to change.

However, ex-Labour TD Michael McNamara claims people are more interested in issues like jobs and health than how the party decides on its leader.

He insists the current system is the most realistic.

Meanwhile Alan Kelly has criticised the election process, as he spoke today for the first time since losing out to Brendan Howlin.

The party's former Deputy Leader claims Labour's constitution needs to be reviewed
