Plans For Dail Recess May Be Scrapped

It appears plans for the Dáil to go into recess on July 7th for up to 12 weeks may well be dropped.

The Ceann Comhairle says it's his understanding that building work to be carried out in the Leinster House complex does not require the Dáil to begin holidays so early.

Opposition parties have insisted the Dáil can't have such a long recess.

The Houses of the Oireachtas and OPW have been planning necessary building and structural work on Leinster House for some time.

This will see the Seanad chamber closed and moved for an extended period.

It's also planned to re-wire the Dáil chamber and last night the FG PP was told this would require the Dáil going into recess on July 7 for up to 12 weeks.

That couldn't be acceptable, says Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald:

Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said it was a matter for the Dáil to deal with when it would go into recess.

But then the Ceann Comhairle Seán O'Fearghail poured cold water on the need for the Dáil to go into recess early.

So it appears TDs will not be getting a 12 week break this summer, but what the compromise will be will have to be thrashed out in the weeks ahead.
