Cautious Welcome For Changes To Legislation On Sex Offenders’ Details

The Department of Justice says a law change is on the way which will see details of sex offenders made available to the public.

An amendment to the Sex Offenders Bill would see the names and addresses of offenders disclosed to the public if there's a danger to society.

The information would be given to the fewest possible number of people and could be withheld if the offender agrees to act so that the threat no longer exists.

Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor and Barrister Clare Colleran Molloy has given the plans a cautious welcome.

Support groups working with the victims of sexual assaults have also been giving their reaction.

IMiriam Duffy, who is the Executive Director at Rape Crisis MidWest says more work is needed on an interagency basis ahead of legislation changes.
