Shannon Father Says Government Must Negotiate On Orkambi

A Shannon father of a young girl with cystic fibrosis says the Government must negotiate a deal with the producers of a "game-changing" drug to treat the condition.

Orkambi, which costs nearly 160,000 euro a year, has been rejected for Irish Patients on cost effectiveness grounds.

It could help 500 people throughout the country.

Kieran Mc Carthy, is the Clare representative on the National Executive Committee of Cyctic Fibrosis Ireland.

His 8-year-old daughter Aoibheann, a CF sufferer, would qualify for the drug in four years time, and hsays campaigners will fight tooth and nail to ensure the drug is made available to everyone who needs it.

Meanwhile, the Tánaiste says she agrees with the National Centre For PharmaEconomics' ruling on Orkambi.

Frances Fitzgerald's told the Dáil that the Health Minister is trying to ensure a quick resolution to the issue.

She says drug manufacturers can't be allowed to hold countries or patients to ransom.
