Senior Members Of Government Pressed For Views On High Profile Corofin Eviction

Two of the most senior members of government have been pressed for their views on a recent high profile attempted eviction of a man from his home in Corofin.

However, Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald and Finance Minister Michael Noonan have said little about the incident in responses to two Sinn Féin TDs.

The incident in question occured in May when video of the attempted eviction of Tommy Collins emerged online.

Masked men were filmed as they attempted to carry out a court order permitting the eviction – Mr. Collins eventually stayed in his home.

In the Dáil this week, Tanaiste Frances  Fitzgerald was asked, in her role as Minister for Justice, a number of questions including whether any Gardaí had been disciplined following on from the incident.

In a written answer to Sinn Fein's Seamus Healy and Jonathan O'Brien, she said the Garda Commissioner is responsible for Garda operational matters, and that she has no role in them.

She also pointed out that the attempted eviction came as a court-issued repossession order was being executed – as a result, Minister Fitzgerald said it was not open to her to comment or intervene in the matter in any way.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Michael Noonan was also asked to address the matter.

In a brief response, he said this would be "inappropriate".

He also said that he could not interfere in the day-to-day running of the institution concerned, namely Bank of Ireland.
