It follows a search operation in reponse to reports that a person had fallen from the Cliffs of Moher.

The alarm was raised at around ten past five yesterday evening when the Irish Coast Guard received a report that a person had fallen from the Cliffs of Moher at Aill Na Search.

The Doolin Coast Guard unit was alerted and mobilised to investigate the report and members of the Kilkee unit of the service were also requested to assist.

Volunteers set up their abseiling equipment to reach the base of the cliff while other members were able to make the ascent by an old goat track.

The entire recovery operation took over four hours and the body of a man was recovered to the cliff top at quarter past nine last night.

The body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will take place later today.

A Garda investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy is now being carried out.
