Claims That New Pay By Weight Charges Won’t Solve Clare’s Illegal Dumping Problem

Clare's Fianna Fail TD insists that new pay-by-weight charges alone won't solve the problem of illegal dumping in the county.

Timmy Dooley is calling for additional resources and funding to tackle the ongoing issue here.

Meanwhile, it's expected a new full-time environmental officer will be appointed to the Killaloe Municipal District within the next month.

A letter sent to Clare County Council on behalf of Alan Kelly says enforcing litter laws is a matter for each local authority.

The letter was sent  following a special representation made by the council to the recently-departed Minister for the Environment.

It also refers to reform of the household waste collection system, describing the introduction of pay by weight charges from July 1st as a positive step in the fight against litter.

But Deputy Timmy Dooley believes the new system may incentivise those responsible for illegal dumping rather than deter them.

Meanwhile a Maghea Councillor is welcoming the expected appointment of a new full-time environmental officer for the Killaloe area.

There are currently only three wardens here which means that the East Clare district, which covers more than a third of the county, is only monitored on a part-time basis.

However, it's expected that a full time warden will be in place within the next month.

Pat Hayes hopes there will further improvement in the enforcement of litter laws in the county.
