The government says it will take action as soon as next week if necessary to stop waste collection companies hiking bin charges.
Last night housing and local government minister Simon Coveney told the Dáil he could suspend the system, introduce regulations, or a new statutory instrument governing the charges.

He's to meet the waste collection companies this evening amid growing opposition after some of them hiked standing charges by as much as 200 percent.
Minister Coveney says he'll have a clear message for them.
