Refugee Crisis Continues To Grow

One in every 113 people on the planet has been forced to flee their home, according to UN figures.

They show that a record 65.3 people became refugees last year, the largest amount since the Second World War.

There's been a 50 per cent increase since 2011, largely because of wars in Africa and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the Clare Immigrant Support Centre are appealing to people on the housing list here not direct their anger towards refugees.

Last week the first Syrian families to be given refuge in Clare arrived at Shannon Airport.

The forty seven people, who are escaping the war torn country, will live in Shannon and Sixmilebridge and a second group of fifty people will be housed in an as yet unspecified location in the county later this year.

Ther has been some concern that the families are to be be given priority over those on the social housing list, and while Orla Ni Eili acknowledges that action is needed to address the housing crisis, refugees are not to blame.
