Dooley Hopes Bin Charge Freeze Won’t Negatively Impact On Households Here

Clare's Fianna Fail TD hopes the proposed freezing of bin charges will not negatively impact on those trying to responsibly manage their waste here.

Timmy Dooley is commenting as The Irish Waste Management Association say they've agreed to the measure.

A group, which represents 41 waste management companies says it has offered to freeze bin charges for 12 months.

It will run a parallel pricing system – to show customers how much they WOULD pay under the pay-by-weight model.

However, the IWMA doesn't represent ALL bin companies – with two large Dublin firms among notable absentees.

However, three companies serving Clare are included.

Minister Simon Coveney is expected to unveil the government's plan later today, on how to deal with the controversy around the new pay-by-weight system.

Caroline Walsh of the Irish Waste Management Association, says a parallel pricing system would provide households with
transparency on how much it would cost, if a pay-by-weight system was implemented.

One Clare TD claims that whatever solution is found, people need to bear in mind their responsibility to reduce household waste.

Deputy Dooley says many here already pay by weight and he hopes they are not unduly impacted by the changes.

Meanwhile, the Sinn Fein leader says its up to Fianna Fáil to ensure it stands with the majority of TD's opposed to a major hike in bin charges.

Sinn Féin says it will bring a motion to the Seanad tomorrow, which it hopes will annul the legislation for the new pay-by-weight bin charges.
