It comes on a week when the level of overcrowding there had been the highest in the country for three days running – on Tuesday, 205 people presented at the emergency department over the 24 hour period.

UL Hospitals Group says the proportion requiring admission, including many frail elderly patients, has also increased and that it regrets that any patient had to face long waits during busy periods.

Nurses say the HSE isn't doing enough to alleviate overcrowding and the INMO's Midwest representative, Mary Fogarty claims HSE failures are having a severe impact on patients and staff.
