Clare Welcome For Proposal To Re-Instate Town Councils

A former Mayor of Kilrush insists that the abolition of town councils has ultimately aided in the decline of many rural areas within the county.

As part of a range of local Government reforms, aimed at saving the taxpayer over 420 million euro, 80 municipal authorities across the country were closed down in 2014, including those in Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush and Kilkee.

Fianna Fáil is due to make a raft of proposals over the coming weeks including the re-establishment of Town Councils in areas with populations of at least 7,500.

Former Independent Councillor Mairéad O'Briensays she doesn't believe the move would have a significant impact on the level of funding needed in the county.
