Emergency services were alerted around twenty to ten last night after two cars collided at Highfield Park on the Gort Road.

A 42 year-old man who was out walking, was injured in the incident, and was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he remains in a critical condition this morning.

Gardaí say a number of other people involved in the collision received minor injuries.

The Gort Road will be closed from Sheil's roundabout to Kelly's Corner for a number of hours this morning, to facilitate a forensic investigation and diversions are in place.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible and anyone travelling from Barefield, or southbound on the M18 motorway, are asked to enter Ennis via the Tulla Road exit.

Gardaí in Ennis are investigating and are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 065 68 48 100.
