The Today Show – Friday February 3rd

Andrea Galgey, a member of SPARK – a group of single parents across Ireland spoke about the groups objectives and described how the cuts are having an impact on her life as a single mother. This week Minister Joan Burton will send to thousands of one-parent families a letter to review existing one-parent claimants. As 65% of the poorest children in Ireland live in one-parent households and SPARK feels this letter will terrify many single parents. Single parents across Ireland on social media have been organising, and have set up the campaign SPARK to oppose these cuts.

Dr. Mary Flynn, a Chief Specialist in Public Health Nutrition with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland spoke about the new public consultation process set to take place. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has announced a national consultation to seek opinions on the best way of putting calorie information on menus in Ireland. This is an initiative Minister Reilly announced late last year by writing to fast food outlets and cafes requesting that they consider including calories on their menus.  Ireland currently has the second highest rate of obesity in Europe and research shows that displaying  ‘calories on menus’ helps consumers to make healthier and more informed choices about what they eat and encourages them to eat smaller portions
