On Thursday’s Morning Focus John Cooke spoke with Yasine Mohabuth – Senior News Editor -Radio Plus, Mauritius – live from Port Louis

He has been covering trial of Avinash Treebhoowoon and Sandip Moneea accused of murdering Michaela McAreavey and spoke with John about the trial and how it is unfolding

Yesterday John McAreavey gave evidence in court about what happened on the morning of his wife’s death in Mauritius
It was his first time attending proceedings because witnesses are not allowed in the court until they are called to testify
The two accused – 30-year-old Avinash Treebhoowoon and 42-year-old Sandip Moneea deny murdering Michaela McAreavey in her hotel room in January 2011.

A new study puts infancy and adolescence as the most costly time for families

The Vincentian Partnership for Social Justice carried out the ‘Cost of A Child’ research, which shows that childcare costs for infants are one of the biggest financial pressures on families
However, with childcare costs excluded, the expense of meeting the food, clothing and education needs of a teenager was the highest – at over 144 euro a week
Dr Bernadette McMahon, Director – Vincentian Partnership for Social Justice. spoke with John saying families with teenagers are struggling to meet the most basic of needs.

Councillor Claire Haugh was elected as Mayor in Kilkee at Tuesday’s AGM 
This her fifth time being elected Mayor in 27 years  on Kilkee Town Council
She says the Summer season has begun well in the seaside resort, despite the changeable weather
She will be focussing on promoting tourism in the town and improving amenities and environmental beauty

Diabetes Ireland is calling on the HSE to put in place promised nursing and dietician support to make the treatment available to children and adolescents with diabetes at the Mid-West Hospital Limerick
They say the therapy gives children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes flexibility, improves quality of life and can reduce the long-term risks and complications associated with the condition
Earlier this year the HSE promised very modest increases in diabetes nursing and dietician support to allow for insulin pump therapy to become available to children and adolescents with diabetes at these hospitals
Dr Anna Clark, Research Manager with Diabetes Ireland, explained.
 
Grainne Flynn of the Diabetes Ireland – Clare branch in Ennis described the difference between this type of treatment and multiple daily injections need two types of insulin – hard to find a balance

Catherine Wiley of the Catholic Grandparents’ Association has just returned from Milan where she addressed the World Family Congress on 29 May, asking: “will our Grandchildren be Catholics?”
Wiley founded the Catholic Grandparents Association in 2002 to give recognition to the vital role grandparents play in children’s lives
She said the response was phenomenal with many groups vowing to begin Catholic Parent’s Associations in their own countries
She also met with Cardinal Sean Brady yesterday to relay points raised in Milan
Speaking at the Eucharistic Congress next week- many people she met in Milan will be coming to Ireland for the congress – Catherine had a word with John.
