It’s claimed new bylaws enacted in Lahinch this week is damaging the local surf school industry – and put jobs at risk.
Since Monday, the operators of five surf schools at Lahinch have had to move their businesses to a small area in a car park at the far end of the beach at the north Clare coastal spot.
Following the rise in surfing activities at the North Clare beach in the last decade, the Council has decided to introduce the bye-laws to make the area safer for walkers, swimmers and other visitors.

Lahinch County Councillor Bill Slattery explained that the five north Clare councillors proposed this – they said surf vans, wetsuits, surf boards were clogging up the prom and they were receiving many complaints from the public
They offered the new spaces to the surfers at a reduced rate  – it was their view that this is a more appropriate place for the surfers
John spoke with Ben Bennet from Ben’s Surf Clinic which is located in Lahinch who said its putting their livelhood at risk – and threatening overall business in the area
