Morning Focus Wednesday August 1

This week’s meeting of the Clare Joint Policing Committee saw discussion on a number of issues, including the number of boy racers driving erratically on the county’s roads.
While many local representatives admit the problem is not as bad as during the celtic tiger era, concern was expressed about this dangerous activity in a number of areas.
 

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus John Cooke discussed this with Councillor Pat Hayes from Caher, Clarecastle Councillor Paul Murphy and Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe about issues in their areas.

Teagasc have been awarded a license by the EPA to carry out field research on a GM potato, designed to resist potato blight disease
Teagasc propose to carry out the research over the next 4 years in order to determine the impact this technology could have on the Irish agri-environment
John Spink – Head of Crops Science with Teagasc – explained what this means.

Agricultural Tutor from Bridgetown Jim Cronin says he would have concerns that this could compromise our image abroad as there is a perception that GM is unnatural and interfering with nature 

A major international oral history conference has been announced for Ennis this September (28th-29th)
The second annual conference of the Oral History Network of Ireland, whose founding members includes the Clare Folklore group, Cuimhneamh an Chláir have confirmed that internationally renowned oral historian and writer Allesandro Portelli will be the key note speaker for the event
Tomas McConmara,  Oral History Network of Ireland’s National Policy Development Officer and Cuimhneabh and Chlair; and Regina Fitzpatrick, Chairperson of the Oral History Network of Ireland, explained.

Clare FM’s Deputy News Editor Trudy Waters met John Kerin, Chief Superintendent of the Clare Garda Division to speak about policing issues in the county
It’s been confirmed that 43 Gardai have been lost from the Clare Division since March of 2010.  Three more retirements are expected next month, and more could follow by the end of the year
This week saw the release of new statistics on crime for the first half of the year, showing that overall levels in the county are broadly in line with last year, and Chief Superintendent Kerin says he’s pleased with the results
However, he admits the potential of further retirements and ongoing budgetary concerns are worrying

Today is the 80th anniversary of one of Ireland’s biggest sporting achievements
In the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angelus Pat O’Callaghan and Bob Tisdall won Gold medals for Ireland
Later that day Kilnaboy’s Michael “Sonny” Murphy competed in the steeplechase event- but sadly before the next Olympics Sonny had passed away
James Neylon, PRO of Kilnaboy Athletics Club, joined John in studio to tell Michael’s story.

Paul Wolfe of the Clare Citizens’ Information Service joined John in studio to answer listeners’ queries on social welfare entitlements, employment and consumer law issues.
