The Afternoon Show – Wednesday October 31st 2012

On The Afternoon Show today, Máire Moynahan spoke to New York Fire Chief Danny Melia to discuss the clean up operation following super storm Sandy. At least 50 people have been killed across the east coast of America and Canada. While more than 8 million people across 17 US states are still without power after super storm Sandy hit. A massive clean up operation is underway following the storm – the biggest to hit the area for decades.  Transport and communications have been severely hampered – the New York subway system is under several feet of water.

Odile le Bolloch of Stop Food Waste and the Environmental Protection Agency also joined the show to talk about how Irish Households are throwing away up to a thousand euro a year in wasted food. Official figures show that consumers here are also tossing away a million tonnes of food a year, which equates to 700 euro per household on average. According to the Environmental Protection Agency we throw away up to a third of the food we buy.

Dr. Ross Morgan is a medical consultant the Chairperson of ASH Ireland. ASH is an anti-smoking group, which is calling for a 60 cent increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes in December’s budget. Ash Ireland says over 900 thousand smokers in the country smoke 6 billion cigarettes every year, and a significant price increase is the best weapon in the fight against the habit. It says 5 thousand 7 hundred people die of tobacco-related illnesses every year and the government has to take a leadership role in the effort to cut that number.

Also on today’s show – to celebrate Hallowe’en, Jane O’Brien of Ennis Walking Tours took Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan on a “Ghostly Tour of Ennis”. Did you know that here in Co. Clare and particularly in Ennis ghost sightings are not as rare as you’d imagine…the town is full of spooky stories – some are myth and legend but many would disagree and say that Clare’s county town is indeed haunted! From mad monks at Ennis Friary to the Clare witch – Biddy Early! There are plenty of creepy characters throughout the town’s history. See www.enniswalkingtours.ie for more details

Bella Hehir of the Turnpike Residents Association also spoke to The Afternoon Show about how she and her fellow residents have organised a very special Hallowe’en party.  It’s the 8th year of the Hallowe’en party; there’ll be goody bags, competitions and lots of fun.  All are welcome to attend

Stephen McDermott – the Clare FM Movie Reviewer and presenter of Your Tunes gave us the best of Hallowe’en horror films to watch tonight
