The Afternoon Show – Tuesday January 8th 2013

Today’s edition of The Afternoon Show began with a look at the latest from Australia, where wild fires have been raging throughout the south-east of the country.  Matthew Woolfrey, reporter with 2GB radio in Sydney, told us how fire fighters have been battling enormous fires but thankfully, no one has been injured and only a small number of properties have been damaged.

New figures show that 90 per cent of Irish young people are not getting sufficient levels of exercise.  Only 14 per cent of 10 to 18 year olds are meeting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.  Exercise Physiologist Dr. Sarah Kelly told us that the long-term implications this can have when it comes to young peoples’ health in later life, and about a new initiative to help combat this.  For more information on the Schools Fitness Challenge 2013, check www.avivahealth.ie/fitnesschallenge

Bowie’s back!  To mark his 66th birthday, the legendary singer revealed and released his new single, Where Are We Now.  A new album, The Next Day, follows in March – they’re his first releases in ten years.  Midwest-based music journalist John O’Regan told us he’s very excited about the news, and predicted good things from the album.

Neil Delamere revealed a number of secrets to us, including his Clare cousins, his appearance on Blackboard Jungle and what he and Andrew Maxwell got up to on a visit to Ennis.  Neil is coming back to the county to perform his new show, ‘Delamere Mortal’ at Glor on January 18th.

If you’re in the Shannon area, and looking for a new hobby maybe you could give knitting a whirl.  Janet Hopkins of the Sit & Knit Women’s Circle told us all about the group which sees members meet, mingle and trade yarns every Tuesday.  The events, at the Shannon Family Resource Centre’s Respond Building take place weekly at 7:30 and all are welcome.

If there’s something you’d like us to discuss on The Afternoon Show, feel free to contact us any time at afternoon@clare.fm or by calling or texting during the show, which is on each weekday from 1:30pm.
